Small towns, different searches

This corner of Somerset is a cluster of small market towns rather than one centre, and people search by the name of the town they have in mind. That has three consequences for a business here.

Name the towns you serve. A website that only says "Somerset" gives search engines little to match when someone searches for a service in Bruton or Castle Cary. Say plainly which towns you cover, on your homepage and your service pages.

Set up your Google Business Profile to match how you work. If customers come to you, use your real address. If you travel to them, set the profile up as a service-area business, which Google's guidelines say should not stretch beyond about two hours' drive from where you are based. Watch out for Wincanton's name. Wincanton is also the name of a national logistics company, and when we checked Google's search suggestions for "wincanton business" in September 2026, most were about that company, such as its business parks and its grocery business, rather than the town. A business in the town is better served by pairing the town with the specific service, or using phrases such as "Wincanton high street", than by relying on "Wincanton business". The local calendar

Much of this area's footfall follows fixed dates, which makes it unusually easy to plan around. Each of these is from the organiser's own site:

• Castle Cary street market runs every Tuesday, 8.30am to 1.30pm, throughout the year, around the Market House. We looked at what the market does for the shops around it.
• The Frome Independent takes over Frome's high street on the first Sunday of the month from March to December, with its next market on 4 October 2026.
• Shepton Mallet Sunday Market runs on the last Sunday of the month, 10am to 3pm, organised by Black Sheep Events CIC, with its 2026 dates listed on its site.
• Wincanton Racecourse opens its 2026/27 jump racing season on Sunday 25 October, with a Boxing Day meeting among the fixtures listed on its site.
• Glastonbury Festival returns from 23 to 27 June 2027, according to the festival's ticket announcement, with general admission tickets on sale from 4 October 2026. National Rail gives Castle Cary as the festival's nearest station, and we wrote about what that weekend is worth to the town.

For a business, the point is simple: put these dates in the calendar, decide which ones affect your trade, and plan stock, staff, opening hours and any advertising around them in advance.

Local organisations worth knowing

• Somerset Growth Hub, run through Somerset Council, offers fully funded, impartial support for businesses at every stage, from starting up to growing. In September 2026 it highlighted a new £10 million government hospitality grant scheme for independent pubs, restaurants and cafés, with applications expected to open from the end of September 2026.
• Somerset Chamber of Commerce describes itself as a 500-strong network of member businesses, acting as the voice of local business since 1995, with networking events, workshops and training. We keep a fuller, dated list in business support in Somerset in 2026.
• Somerset Council has been the single council for the area since it came into being on 1 April 2023, bringing together the services of the former district councils, including South Somerset, and Somerset County Council. If your website still links to old district council pages for licences or local services, check those links.
