Wincanton, the town that gave a national company its name

In 1925 a milk haulage business, then a subsidiary of the West Surrey Central Dairy Company, took the name of its Somerset town and became Wincanton Transport and Engineering. A century later the name is still on the lorries, though the company left Wincanton long ago.

What happened next is a long way from Somerset.

Wincanton grew into one of Britain's biggest logistics companies, listed on the London Stock Exchange, and its head office moved to Chippenham. Its last depot in the town, at Hawkers Bridge on Southgate Road, was due to close in October 2023, when a milk-collection contract passed to Müller's own logistics team. Then in April 2024 the American group GXO Logistics bought the company, and its shares came off the market. It still works near the town rather than in it: GXO has a logistics operation at Templecombe, a few miles south, where it was advertising warehouse jobs in September 2026.

The dairy it started from has gone too. The West Surrey Central Dairy set up in Wincanton around 1890, began making what became Cow and Gate baby milk there in 1904, and built a large factory in 1936. It employed about 700 people in the later twentieth century, and closed in 1987. Some of my own family worked there, and a Cow and Gate sign still greets you as you come into town.

What's in a place name

Most businesses will never put their town's name on anything bigger than a van, but naming yourself after a place is the same bet at any size. A name tied to a place tells people where you are without your having to say so, which is half of explaining what you do in one sentence. A rival two counties away can't stumble on the same name, and a place doesn't rebrand, so the name survives the kind of change that would sink a pun.

The cost is that the name means nothing at all to a stranger. Nobody in Chippenham knew where Wincanton was until the firm made the word stand for something of its own, and that took decades. It's the best result a place name can hope for, and the slowest.

For a bakery or a framer named after its own town, the bet is safer, because the name never has to travel. That's the case for Wincanton's own high street too. And the town has since watched its name travel further than anyone expected a second time, through a Discworld shop with fans on every continent.
