Do small businesses need to worry about AI search yet?
Worry, no. Spend an hour finding out where you stand, yes. Most of the fixes are things worth doing anyway.

Not worry, no. Check, yes, and it takes about an hour. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, ask each the question a customer would ask, and write down what comes back. That hour tells you whether this is urgent for you or something to keep an eye on, and almost everything it turns up is worth fixing for ordinary search reasons anyway.
The reason to do it now rather than later is not that the sky is falling. It is that the fixes take time to take effect, and they are cheap.
Why it is not a panic
Most buying journeys still involve a search engine, a website and a human decision. An assistant answering a question is one more route in, not a replacement for the others. Anyone telling you that traditional search is finished is selling something, and usually cannot show you the measurement behind the claim.
So treat this as a new shelf in a shop you already trade in, rather than the shop closing.
Why it is not nothing either
Two things have genuinely changed.
An assistant names a few options rather than listing a page of them. On a results page you can be sixth and still get found. In an assistant's answer there often is no sixth. That is a different shape of competition and it rewards being known rather than being optimised.
And the answer increasingly arrives before the click. We wrote about what that has done to local search specifically, and the same pattern applies more widely: the decision moves further from your website and closer to whatever the assistant already knows about you.
The hour, in order
- Ask for a recommendation in your category, the way a customer would phrase it, not the way you would. "Who does X for Y in Z." Note whether you appear and who does.
- Ask what your company does, by name. Check whether the answer is right. A wrong answer is more damaging than no answer, and it is the easiest thing on this list to fix.
- Ask how someone buys from you or gets started. Check the steps it gives are your actual steps.
- Ask it to compare options in your category. See what it says the differences are.
- Write down what was wrong, not just what was missing. Wrong beats missing for urgency.
Run each of these more than once. Answers vary, and one run tells you very little.
What usually fixes it
The unglamorous list, in rough order of effect for most small businesses.
Say what you do in one sentence, in the same words, everywhere. Your homepage, your description tag, your directory listings and your social profiles. An assistant is trying to work out what you are from scattered sources, and the more consistent they are the more confident it can be. If you cannot write that sentence yet, start there.
Put the facts on the page as structured data. Schema markup describing your organisation, your services and your prices is how a machine reads a page without guessing. It is a one-off job on most sites.
Publish your prices, or at least your bands. An assistant cannot tell anyone what you cost if the page says "contact us". This is a commercial decision as much as a technical one, but it is a real gap.
Be mentioned somewhere other than your own website. Directories, trade publications, local press, review platforms. Assistants weigh sources they did not get from you. This is the slowest of the four and the one most worth starting early.
Answer real questions in public. A page that answers a question directly, in the first paragraph, is far more quotable than one that gets there eventually.
Where we fit
That list is most of our AI search visibility service, and you can work through it yourself from the summary above. If you would rather have it measured and prioritised, that is what the service is for, and the page carries the prices.
The genuine answer to the question in the title: spend the hour, fix what the hour finds, and revisit it in six months.

Make sure ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini find you, describe you correctly and put you forward when someone asks them for a business like yours. The free check is immediate. The fix list takes about a week, and the fixes themselves depend on how much needs changing.
