Do you actually need a digital marketing strategy? Five signs you do
If your marketing feels busy but not effective, the problem usually isn't effort. It's direction.
Most small businesses don't lack marketing activity. They post, they boost, they tweak the website, they try a bit of SEO. What they lack is a plan that joins it all up. Here are five signs it's time to stop and write one.
1. You can't say which channel brings in customers
If someone asked where your last ten customers came from and you'd have to guess, you're spending blind, and the reports that answer it take an afternoon to set up. A strategy starts by tracing leads back to their source, so you know what to double down on and what to cut.
2. You're doing a bit of everything
Some social, some ads, a newsletter that goes out when someone remembers. Spreading a small budget thinly across every channel usually means none of them gets enough attention to work. Strategy is as much about what you stop doing as what you start.
3. Your messaging changes depending on who writes it
If your website says one thing, your ads another and your sales team a third, customers get mixed signals. One sentence, agreed internally, fixes more of this than people expect. A strategy fixes the core message first, then every channel carries it.
4. You react to competitors instead of planning
A competitor launches a promotion, so you launch one. They start a podcast, so you think about one. Reactive marketing is exhausting and rarely effective. A plan gives you the confidence to ignore the noise.
5. You're about to spend real money
Hiring an agency, rebuilding the website or committing to a paid ads budget? That's exactly the moment to have a strategy in place. It's far cheaper to plan first than to fix an expensive mistake later.
What a good strategy looks like
- A clear picture of who your best customers are and how they buy
- An honest look at competitors and where you can win
- A short list of channels, each with a job to do
- A budget split based on evidence, not habit
- A 90-day action plan and a handful of numbers to track
It doesn't need to be a 60-page document. The best strategies fit on a few pages and get used every week.
